Me Time

I was told throughout the whole wedding planning process, whether the advice came from my latest issue of SELF magazine or in the form of friendly advice from close pals, “Don’t forget to make time for you.”

It seems like silly advice really.  Of course, I’m going to make time for me.  Although, it’s harder than it sounds.  You get so used to doing everything with your significant other that it sometimes feels weird to do something apart.  Then again, sometimes, it feels exhilarating!  I think it just depends on what it is that I’m doing away from my significant other.

For example, I absolutely adore my bi-weekly coffee catch up sessions with my dear friend, Kristen, and I do enjoy gabbing on the phone with my mom or sitting in the tub with a good book.

My husband and I have actually talked about “me time,” and how important it is for each of us to have our own likes and dislikes and how it’s ok for me to go out with the girls one night or for him to hang out with the guys.  I think it keeps our relationship healthy if we both know that we’re not leaning on the other one all the time.  Besides, no one likes a tag-a-long.

Don’t get me wrong, we love doing things together too!  We have our little things, like watching a good movie on the gorgeous HDTV we have sitting in our living room (Yes, that was a plug just for my husband), or going out for dessert or even taking a nightly stroll around the block with our puppies.

Sometimes my husband and I will be in the same room doing two completely different things (he’s playing video games, and I’m reading a book), and it feels like we’re in the best of both worlds because we’re doing something together, yet apart.

All in all, I am glad that I listened to everyone’s advice and I make sure to give myself ample “me time.”  Honestly, if I had to be with my husband 24/7, I think that I would go crazy.  Like the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be bad for you.
